In recent years drug treatments have been introduced for Alzheimer’s disease. These ‘cholinesterase inhibitor’ drugs – Donepezil (Aricept), Rivastigmine (Exelon) and Galantamine (Reminyl) – are designed to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Treatment is not effective in all patients with Alzheimer’s disease, but undergoing a trial of drug treatment as this is the only way of identifying those patients who may respond and benefit from medication.
Patients who are started on drug treatment for Alzheimer’s disease will have the opportunity of returning to the clinic in order for their response to be monitored.
Where there are other conditions diagnosed at the clinic we may be able to advise other treatments or recommend further assessment by other clinical services.
At the clinic we can provide additional information about dementia for patients, and families and carers - and also contact details for other helpful organisations.
